My granddad Dick Hills and my dad Paul Owen were both comedy writers. I say 'were' because my granddad died in 1996 and my dad reluctantly gave it up to be a solicitor. Both provided huge inspiration. It wasn't like they sat me down and taught me how to write but I learnt an appreciation for words and a desire to express myself in an interesting way.

One of the reasons I love song writing is that it gives me the opportunity to write and think about life from different perspectives.

When I began talking about my passion for writing with my friend Chris we felt that together we could write something that was funny and relevant. For 18 months, during a period I was based in London, we met up once a week and wrote a script about the weird world of University. We had never written a script before so at times it was painful having to adjust our scribbles into this specialist way of writing. To this day only a handful of people have read that 18 months of work.

I wrote my best friend and her fiancé a wedding song that I played at their service. I think I was more nervous than they were! I wanted to capture the innocence and sweetness of their relationship but without being too sentimental.

My friend Kirstin used to come to all my gigs in London so when she asked me to write a song for her wedding day I was very touched. The brief I wrote to was "love with no boundaries"
